The New Zealand Prosthetic Eye Service was founded in 2008 to provide for the needs of prosthetic eye wearers in New Zealand. We offer these special people evidence-based professional care from accessible locations in established eye centres throughout the North Island and our fees are mostly fully subsidised by the Accident Compensation Corporation, Ministry of Health or local District Health Boards.
We are the only specialist service working exclusively with anophthalmic patients and we make and fit more prosthetic eyes than any other practice in New Zealand. We work within a team environment where optometrists and ophthalmologists are readily available for consultation.
Our amazing patients have contributed more free time and effort towards prosthetic eye research than any other anophthalmic population in the world. Together we have carried out groundbreaking research into the management of mucoid discharge, the eye socket’s response to prosthetic eyewear and the psychological impact of eye loss.
We have collaborated with universities and organisations in New Zealand and around the world and continue to work with them.
