Oculoplastic Surgery

While most prosthetic eyes provide excellent aesthetic and functional outcomes, some patients experience complications due to socket distortion from scarring or natural recession. These complex cases require a collaborative approach between prosthetists and oculoplastic surgeons. Surgical interventions, while offering greater potential for improvement, must often work within pre-existing anatomical limitations. Optimal results are achieved through a unified strategy, where surgical and prosthetic expertise complement each other.

The New Zealand Prosthetic Eye Service uniquely delivers this integrated approach. By combining oculoplastic surgery for socket and eyelid reconstruction, optometry for comprehensive eye health, and specialized ocular prosthetics for fabrication and fitting, we ensure patients receive the highest standard of care for even the most challenging cases.

It is not vanity that motivates anophthalmic patients to seek cosmetic surgery but a simple desire to blend naturally into the community – just like the rest of us.
